Are Knives More Dangerous than "Assault Weapons"?

Many on the left say we should ban "assault weapons," but what about knives and other blunt objects? Statistically, hammers and knives contribute to more deaths than rifles. So, why ban rifles and not knives if weapons really are to blame for murder?
