Why do conspiracy theories become almost religious for some people? Skeptic magazine founder Michael Shermer explains that when a belief becomes part of someone’s identity, it becomes much harder to change their mind. Instead of treating a theory as absolutely true or absolutely false, Shermer says people should ask how likely it is to be true—and stay willing to change their mind when the evidence changes.
