Dr. Jay Bhattacharya is the 18th Director of the National Institutes of Health, where he oversees the nation’s medical research agency. A physician and health economist, Dr. Bhattacharya previously held appointments at Stanford University as a professor of medicine and economics, studying population aging, chronic disease, health policy, and the effects of government policies and programs on health. He has also held fellowships at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, the Freeman Spogli Institute, and the Hoover Institution, and previously conducted research at the National Bureau of Economic Research and the SPHERE Institute. Dr. Bhattacharya earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics, his medical degree, and his Ph.D. in economics from Stanford University.
