
Danielle Smith
Premier of Alberta
Danielle Smith is a Canadian politician, journalist, and business leader. She holds bachelor’s degrees in English and Economics from the University of Calgary. Smith began her public service career as a school board trustee, then moved into journalism and talk radio before gaining experience as a lobbyist and business advocate. In 2009, she entered electoral politics as leader of the Wildrose Party and served as Leader of the Official Opposition. After a brief hiatus in media and business leadership, she returned to politics in 2022, winning the leadership of Alberta’s United Conservative Party. She was sworn in as the 19th Premier of Alberta in October 2022 and represents Brooks–Medicine Hat. As Premier, she has pursued a platform focused on provincial sovereignty, notably passing the Alberta Sovereignty Act and exploring alternative provincial structures, while upholding democratic dialogue over separatist impulses.
